Partnering with OpenEvidence

Lucas Swisher, Thomas Laffont, Elijah Sutanto

Earlier this year, my phone rang with a familiar 405 area code - my mom. I assumed our conversation would touch on the greatest hits: when I was coming to visit next, was I eating enough vegetables, when my wife and I would give her grandkids, etc.

Instead, for the first time in over a decade of software investing, I heard her enthusiasm about a technology company. One that she said she was using over a dozen times a day (!) as she saw patients. Karen Swisher is a physician - an award winning oncologist in Tulsa Oklahoma - but she hasn’t exactly been an early adopter of technology (sorry mom). So when I heard this enthusiasm, I knew I had to pay attention.

Every day, millions of healthcare professionals make life-altering decisions under immense time pressure — all while navigating an ever-expanding body of clinical research. These professionals want to use AI - but they need AI they can trust.

OpenEvidence is bridging that gap. Free for U.S. Clinicians and powered by AI, OpenEvidence allows clinicians to query over 35 million peer-reviewed publications—including multimedia and in-depth content from The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association and JAMA specialty journals, through strategic content partnerships—and receive clear, contextualized answers grounded in the latest medical research. The experience is fast, conversational, and built for the dynamic nature of real-world clinical care.

In less than one year since the launch, the platform is already transforming daily workflows: One-third of all U.S. doctors at more than 10,000 care centers nationwide are already using OpenEvidence as of June 2025.

Physicians are no longer just searching—they’re reasoning, validating, and acting with greater clarity and speed. We spoke with over 200 medical professionals to understand the evolving needs in clinical decision-making. Here’s what users of OpenEvidence are saying:

I don’t know of any other tools that do what OpenEvidence does. The ability to query and get immediate results that are dynamic and relevant is unique. No one can keep up to date on all areas of medicine, so this is the best way to stay up to date on what the leading journals recommend.

In the ER, if a patient comes in with a condition and we want to look up the newest literature and what medicines we can give them, we turn to OpenEvidence.

I found OpenEvidence useful right away because I don’t have time to sift through dense UpToDate pages or 50 PubMed articles.

This enthusiasm isn’t just anecdotal — it’s reflected in how physicians are using the product. OpenEvidence has become one of the most heavily trafficked and deeply used digital destinations for doctors today, with clinicians not only returning frequently, but spending meaningful time engaging with the platform in their clinical workflows:

  1. OpenEvidence drives significantly higher web traffic than Doximity AI: For much of the last decade, Doximity (a digital medical network with clinical tools) was treated as the benchmark for online physician engagement. OpenEvidence surpassed that benchmark — with over 12x the usage of Doximity’s AI tools as of June 2025. We see OpenEvidence becoming the new standard for the most widely used digital platform among U.S. physicians

  2. Physicians spend more time on OpenEvidence than many of the leading clinical news & reference platforms: Clinical platforms like Medscape, Epocrates, and Doximity were traditionally staples in a doctor’s digital toolkit. Today, OpenEvidence has overtaken all of them in total time spent by doctors

  3. OpenEvidence sets the benchmark for physician engagement: Physicians spend an average of 13.3 minutes per session on OpenEvidence—nearly ~4x longer than Doximity and ~7x longer than time spent with a typical pharma rep

  4. Physician usage is growing rapidly: Over the past year, OpenEvidence has grown 37x in query volume, now handling 7 million monthly medical questions from logged-in, verified U.S. doctors

We're proud to partner with Daniel Nadler, Zachary Ziegler, and the team at OpenEvidence as they build the intelligent knowledge layer for modern medicine. In a world where clinical time is one of the most constrained and valuable resources, giving doctors the ability to move with greater speed and certainty elevates not just their work, but the entire patient care experience.
